Electro-Mechanical Systems Engineer - University Park, IL

Holland
Salary range: 80000-1000000
KEY RESPONSIBLITIES:
Duties include, but are not limited to:
1. Equipment Design & Evolution
  • Lead the evolution of newly acquired product line by refining 3D mechanical structures and electrical systems. You will bridge the gap between concept and commerce, turning early-stage prototypes into high-performance, field-ready machines.
  • Strip away design complexity to improve manufacturability. You’ll redesign electrical harnesses, control layouts, and mechanical mounts to ensure our equipment is faster to build, easier to service, and more reliable.

 2. Cost & Performance Optimization
  • Conduct deep-dive technical audits of our current fleet to identify "smarter" engineering paths. You will lead projects to consolidate parts and substitute materials, driving down production costs while simultaneously increasing machine durability.
  • Serve as the technical "fixer" for our existing fleet. You will utilize rigorous root-cause analysis to identify failure-prone or over-engineered components and replace them with validated, robust designs that solve the problem for good.
3. Validation & Field Deployment
  • Design the specialized equipment required for the fleet’s deployment. This includes the engineering behind truck integrations, machine handling systems, and modular power skids to ensure seamless transport and setup.
  • Take full accountability for your designs by leading "first-article" testing at rail sites. You will travel to the field to oversee machine commissioning, ensuring your engineering performs perfectly under grueling, real-world conditions.

4. Technical Authority & PLC Support
  • You will provide customers with high-level technical support to ensure machines operate at peak efficiency.
  • You will serve as the primary technical advocate for the customer, capturing field data and user feedback to directly influence the next generation of our equipment.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Office/cubicle environment
  • Shop environment including welding, overhead cranes, and fork trucks
  • Field on-track environment
QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, or Mechatronics Engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience in heavy equipment, industrial machinery, or rail infrastructure, focusing on how electronic controls drive physical hardware.
  • Strong skills in SolidWorks (or similar 3D CAD) for both mechanical structural design and electrical component packaging.
  • Functional knowledge of how heat-affected zones (HAZ) from welding and pre-heating impact metal hardness and structural integrity in rail steel.
  • Able to work to demanding deadlines
  • Work effectively as a team member or leader
  • Knowledge of FMEA, Lean practices, Six Sigma and Value Engineering
  • Hydraulic system design/troubleshooting experience
  • Must maintain a valid passport and driver's license; abide by our Corporate Fleet Policy
  • Ability to complete all pre-employment testing required by Holland, L.P.
