Graphic Design & UI Design Intern - University Park, IL

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 
  • Collaborate with the product and development teams to design and refine user interfaces for web applications and embedded views. 
  • Create high-fidelity UI mockups, interaction states, and visual assets (icons, diagrams, illustrations) aligned with established UX direction. 
  • Help establish and maintain a consistent visual style (typography, color, spacing, iconography) across the product. 
  • Contribute to a scalable design system by building components, variants, and patterns in Figma. 
  • Prepare developer-ready design deliverables including measurements, annotations, and exportable assets. 
  • Support data visualization UI needs such as map overlays, legends, labels, callouts, tool panels, and annotation tools. 
  • Assist with UI design QA by comparing implemented UI to design intent and reporting gaps or improvements. 
  • Perform thorough iteration and refinement based on feedback from stakeholders. 
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 
  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation. 
  • Willingness to wear PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, steel toed boots). 
  • Vision must be sufficient for inputting data into a computer.
  • Keyboarding skills that reduce the risk of carpal tunnel and other office related injuries. 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: 
  • Office/cubicle environment and laboratory environment. 
  • Lab environment. 
  • Shop environment including assembly, welding, overhead cranes and fork trucks. 
  • Work in all weather conditions if needed for project. 
QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • Must be at least 18 years of age with a High School Diploma or GED. 
  • Currently pursuing or recently graduated in Graphic Design, Interaction Design, HCI, Visual Communication, or a related field. 
  • Portfolio demonstrating strong visual design and UI design fundamentals (layout, typography, hierarchy). 
  • Proficient with Figma (Auto Layout, components, variants) and common design handoff workflows. 
  • Ability to create UI assets such as icons and simple illustrations; familiarity with Adobe Illustrator or similar tools is a plus. 
  • Basic understanding of accessibility and inclusive design (contrast, states, focus, readable type). 
  • Comfortable collaborating in a team environment and eager to learn from experienced professionals. 
  • Innovative problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to new challenges. 
  • Intermediate proficiency with MS Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Must be willing to take and pass all mandatory pre-employment testing.
