Sr. Data Scientist - University Park, IL

Salary range: $135000-$145000
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 
  • Work with stakeholders throughout the company and industry to identify opportunities for leveraging industry data to drive business solutions
  • Extending company’s data with third party sources of information when needed
  • Mine and analyze data from existing company databases as well as customer databases to drive optimization and improvement of product development, marketing techniques and business strategies, using state-of-the-art methods
  • Assess the effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources and data gathering techniques
  • Develop custom data models and algorithms to apply to data sets
  • Develop machine and deep learning based algorithms that eliminates or minimizes manual data processing or reporting
  • Develop various testing frameworks and test model quality
  • Coordinate with different functional teams to implement models and monitor outcomes
    Develop processes and tools to monitor and analyze model performance and data accuracy
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
 
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time to customer offices, railroad track testing sites, and on TrackSTAR® testing vehicles
  • Ability to walk on rough ground/railroad track, climb vehicle ladders, inclines, and work on vehicle systems in the field or shop
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
 
  • Ability to handle typical weather extremes when working in the field
  • Willingness to wear PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, steel toed boots) as required
  • General office/home environment

 

 


QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • Master’s in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or another quantitative field preferred; STEM graduates considered DOE
  • 10+ years of experience manipulating data sets and building statistical models
  • Railroad Industry experience is a plus
  • Is familiar with the following software/tools: 
    • Coding knowledge and experience with multiple languages, primarily Python
    • Knowledge and experience in statistical and data mining techniques: GLM/Regression, Random Forest, Boosting, Trees, text mining, social network analysis, etc.
    • Experience querying databases and using statistical computer languages: R, Python, SQL, SAS, etc.
    • Experience using web services: Redshift, S3, Spark, etc.
    • Experience creating and using advanced machine learning algorithms and statistics: regression, simulation, scenario analysis, modeling, clustering, decision trees, neural networks, etc.
    • Experience with distributed data/computing tools: Map/Reduce, Hadoop, Hive, Spark, MySQL, etc.
    • Experience visualizing/presenting data for stakeholders using: Periscope, Business Objects, D3, ggplot, etc.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with an emphasis on business solutions for our customer base
  • Experience working with and creating data architectures
  • Ability to communicate technical verbiage to a non-technical audience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for coordinating across teams
  • A drive to learn and master new technologies and techniques
  • Maintain a valid driver license and abide by our Corporate Fleet Policy
  • Ability to successfully complete all pre-employment testing required by Holland L.P
